Our Guide To Summer Skincare

We are now really getting into the swing of summer 2021! So far, we’ve had a fair amount of good weather and we can only hope the sunshine wants to stick around – seeing as so many of us have had to swap our vacations for staycations!

Despite perhaps not being the same temperature as a tropical beach, the weather is certainly getting warmer here in the UK, and because of this it is important to implement changes to your skincare regime.

Whereas the winter can dry you out, the summer can bring about more oily skin. This is all perfectly natural, of course, even though it’s far from ideal. That’s why we’ve put our heads together and come up with a complete guide to summer skincare. Read on to find out more!

SUN. PROTECTION. FACTOR. We can not emphasise enough the importance of using sunscreen all year round! First, let’s start things off with a quick recap of what SPF means.

So, we go to buy sunscreen and see a number on the bottle, we know products with a lower number are less erm… Strong? Effective? Long-lasting? Hmmm… Not totally sure?

The SPF number on your sunscreen bottle is actually fairly easy to understand. It gives you an estimate of how long it will take your skin to start burning when exposed to the sun. Say you would typically burn after two minutes in the sunshine, applying factor 15 would multiply this time by 15, so you could spend 30 minutes in the sun without a hitch. Whilst this time increases as the strength of the SPF gets higher, it is very important to remember to reapply sunscreen regularly, particularly after swimming or excessive sweating.

Routine use of sunscreen minimises your risk of skin cancer and studies have shown that daily SPF 15 coverage reduces your risk of melanoma by a huge 50%. As an added bonus, it will also diminish signs of ageing such as wrinkles or age spots.

At k:SPA, we would advise using Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport. This should be applied to the face and body a minimum of 15 minutes before heading out into the sunshine. A tan is nice, but healthy-looking skin is even nicer!

Hydrating And Repairing

When it comes to hydration the first thing we would like to say is that drinking lots of water is always important – it’s even more crucial when it’s warm out and will help you to avoid dehydration. It’s not only good for your health, it’s good for your skin.

Healthy skin often requires moisturiser too. You may need to tweak your usual regimen by swapping to a lighter moisturiser in summer. Dermalogica’s Pure Light SPF50 will keep your skin healthy and hydrated whilst also providing that all-important SPF protection.

If you’ve not been keeping up with your skincare, or if a light moisturiser just doesn’t do it for your skin, we may advise trying Dermalogica’s Super Rich Repair. This product is perfect for repairing dry and dehydrated skin. Although more heavyweight, once it has been absorbed you can use any additional products on top. Apply once or twice daily and your skin will look gorgeous!

Facial Rollers – Alleviate Allergy Symptoms!

It’s so beautiful to see all the flora growing strong and enjoying the sunshine, although for a lot of us this often results in our hay fever flaring up. Runny noses, sore and itchy eyes, headaches, it can be so distressing! Antihistamines can only do so much to help alleviate the symptoms, so we suggest using them in conjunction with a facial roller.

A facial roller remains naturally below room temperature, meaning that it can help reduce any puffiness, redness and itching immediately. It can even soothe headaches. Find one to suit you here!

Our Facials

Here at k:SPA our most popular skin treatment is our Signature Facial. Perhaps one of the reasons why it is so popular is because it begins with a consultation with one of our experts to discuss your skincare goals, personalise your treatment AND come up with an aftercare plan that enables you to maintain your results.

Finding the right skincare routine for you can be difficult and lots of people need a little help from an expert in order to identify what works best for them. As well as having different skin types we also all have different skincare priorities. Whether this is acne management, line and wrinkle softening, de-puffing or something else entirely, we can help!
