Hyperpigmentation

Treatments For Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition where darker patches appear on the face and body.  Very often, this pigmentation is caused by over-exposure to the sun's harmful rays, but can also be caused by hormonal changes, medical conditions, and inflamed areas that darken as they heal.

We offer a number of professional skin brightening treatments at k:SPA Skin Clinic in Fareham so please call us on 01489 880 497 for information and advice on how best to treat pigmentation.

What Does Hyperpigmentation Look Like?

Hyperpigmentation often appears on the face as brown, black, gray, red or pink spots or patches.

Also known as age spots, sun spots or liver spots, these darker areas may appear as individual patches or larger clusters.

While they are most commonly seen on the face, hyperpigmentation can occur anywhere on the body.

If you are concerned about the sudden appearance of pigmentation, please consult your GP or health professional.

What Causes Skin Pigmentation?

Common causes of hyperpigmentation include:

Sun damage -  The sun's harmful UV rays cause premature skin ageing with signs including hyperpigmentation such as age spots or sun spots.
Hormonal changes - Patches of pigmentation can indicate hormonal changes. Some women experience an increase in pigmentation during pregnancy.
Scarring - Individuals with acne or eczema may experience hyperpigmentation during and after the healing process.
Medical conditions - Sometimes, hyperpigmentation can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as Addison’s disease.

How To Prevent Skin Pigmentation

Not all hyperpigmentation can be prevented.  However, there are some steps you can take to avoid damaging your skin:

Avoid direct sunlight - If you are outside, sit under a parasol and wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face.
Wear a high SPF - Always apply suntan lotion with an SPF of 15+ - even when it's cloudy.
Use professional products - Dermalogica products containing Vitamin C are known for their skin-brightening capabilities.
Do not pick your skin - Any inflammation of the skin can lead to darker areas of pigmentation as the area heals.

Brightening Treatments At k:SPA Skin Clinic In Fareham

Dermalogica LuminFusion is designed to restore skin luminosity and diminish hyperpigmentation, fine lines & wrinkles. It includes an exfoliating retinol peel, nano infusion to infuse active ingredients into the skin, LED light therapy & Dermalogica Light Energy Masque.
Microneedling is an effective solution for wrinkles, scars and uneven skin tone. A fine-needled device is moved carefully over the skin in order to inflict small injuries on target areas. This triggers the skin’s natural healing processes, encouraging collagen and elastin to renew.
Dermalogica Pro Power Peel provides deep exfoliation and resurfacing, making it ideal for improving the appearance of hyperpigmentation including sun spots and age spots.  Also good for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and breakouts.
